Mokwa, Nigeria – The Republic of Turkey has extended heartfelt condolences to Nigeria following the deadly floods that struck Mokwa and surrounding communities in Niger State, claiming lives and displacing thousands.

In an official statement issued on Sunday, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the scale of destruction caused by the disaster. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and destruction caused by the devastating floods in the Mokwa region of Niger State, Nigeria,” the statement read. “We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria.”

The natural disaster, which occurred over the weekend, has triggered a growing humanitarian crisis in the region. According to data released by the Niger State Government, at least 151 people have lost their lives, while more than 3,000 residents have been displaced from their homes.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the floods destroyed over 260 residential buildings, key township roads, and major bridges in the Mokwa and Raba areas, leaving critical infrastructure in ruins.

In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dispatched a high-level government delegation to Niger State on Saturday. The team has been tasked with assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating immediate relief efforts for affected communities.

The incident has drawn national and international concern, with many calling for swift action to support victims and rebuild affected areas. Turkish solidarity adds to a growing chorus of international sympathy as Nigeria grapples with the aftermath of one of the worst flooding incidents in the region’s recent history.
