Liverpool, May 5, 2025 — Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season, closing the chapter on a remarkable 20-year journey with his boyhood team.
In an emotional statement shared Monday via X (formerly Twitter), the 26-year-old described the decision as the most difficult of his life.
“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season,” Alexander-Arnold wrote. “This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
The England international, who joined the club’s academy at the age of six and rose through the ranks to become a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s side, had kept quiet about his future throughout the campaign to remain focused on Liverpool’s title charge.
“I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No. 20,” he said, referencing Liverpool’s pursuit of a historic 20th league title.
Alexander-Arnold took time to reflect on his two-decade-long association with the club, expressing deep gratitude for the support he’s received since childhood.
“This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years,” he said. “From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.”
His decision to move on, he added, was driven by a desire to grow beyond familiar surroundings.
“I have never known anything else, and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally.”
Widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted defenders of his generation, Alexander-Arnold has been pivotal in Liverpool’s recent era of success, contributing to their Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup triumphs. Known for his vision, passing range, and set-piece mastery, his departure marks the end of an era for both the club and its fanbase.
“I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here,” he said, before closing with a heartfelt message of appreciation.
“From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody – my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters – for the last 20 years. I’ve been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all. My love for this club will never die.”
Reports have linked Alexander-Arnold with a potential move to Real Madrid, though neither the player nor the Spanish giants have confirmed such a transfer.
