BARCELONA — Robert Lewandowski struck twice as a resurgent Barcelona crushed Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in a dominant UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Estadi Olímpic on Wednesday night.
The emphatic win puts Hansi Flick’s side on the brink of their first semi-final appearance since 2019 and extends their unbeaten run to 23 matches in all competitions. With the second leg to be played in Germany next Tuesday, the five-time European champions now stand firmly in control.
Raphinha opened the scoring in the 25th minute, notching his tournament-leading 12th goal, before Lewandowski added a second-half brace to reach 40 goals for the season. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal capped a scintillating individual performance with a well-taken fourth, underlining Barcelona’s dominance on the night.
Tactical Brilliance and Early Control
Flick, who has revitalized Barcelona since his arrival, stuck with his preferred starting XI, handing Fermin Lopez a start over Gavi in the attacking midfield role. The hosts came flying out of the blocks, pressing high and dictating the tempo from kickoff.
Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was called into action early, denying both Yamal and Lewandowski, while the 17-year-old Yamal tormented the visitors’ defense with pace and flair.
Barcelona’s pressure paid off midway through the first half. After Karim Adeyemi foolishly conceded a free-kick by pulling Jules Kounde’s hair, Lopez delivered a pinpoint ball that eventually found its way to Raphinha via Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi. The Brazilian winger tapped home from close range, with a VAR check confirming the goal.
Dortmund Spurn Chances, Barcelona Punish
Dortmund had their chances, most notably through Serhou Guirassy, who missed a gilt-edged opportunity to level before half-time. The striker, who has 10 Champions League goals this season, misfired with only goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to beat.
Those misses proved costly as Barcelona returned from the break with renewed vigor. Just three minutes into the second half, Yamal floated a cross to Raphinha, whose looping header found Lewandowski unmarked at the far post. The Polish striker made no mistake from point-blank range.
Lopez continued to shine, hitting the post and threatening from range, before setting up Lewandowski for his second in the 66th minute — a powerful low strike at the near post that left Kobel rooted.
Yamal Seals Statement Victory
With Dortmund reeling, Yamal delivered the final blow. Released by Raphinha, the Spain international coolly slotted past Kobel to crown a sensational display. The only concern for Barcelona came late on as Yamal signaled to be substituted, though he walked off smiling to a standing ovation.
Looking Ahead
Barcelona, who last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015, now await the outcome of the Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich tie, with a semi-final showdown looming. On current form, Flick’s side — chasing a possible quadruple — appear poised for a return to Europe’s elite.
For Dortmund, last year’s runners-up, the uphill task in the second leg may be insurmountable after a chastening night in Catalonia.
