Abuja — The Federal Government on Thursday addressed recent comments by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at an event in Lagos, the Emir acknowledged the necessity of the reforms but disclosed his decision to refrain from publicly advising the government, citing personal reasons.
In response, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, released a statement recognizing Sanusi’s right to express his views while criticizing his admission of withholding support. The minister described this as a reflection of personal grievances rather than an objective assessment of the reforms.
Government Defends Reforms
The government urged the Emir to prioritize national interests over personal considerations, emphasizing the importance of unity during a critical period in Nigeria’s economic recovery.
“Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges,” the statement read.
Idris highlighted key achievements of the administration, including the unification of exchange rates, which has boosted investor confidence and foreign reserves, and the removal of fuel subsidies, freeing up resources for essential sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The government also cited projections from international organizations, such as the World Bank, to underline the long-term benefits of the reforms, despite the temporary challenges being faced by Nigerians.
Call for Constructive Engagement
Expressing disappointment over the Emir’s perceived lack of support, the government reiterated the need for all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards national development.
“This administration has implemented transformative reforms not because they are easy, but because they are essential for securing Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth,” Idris noted, adding that the reforms addressed decades of mismanagement.
The minister called on leaders to rise above personal or partisan interests, urging them to refrain from rhetoric that could undermine public trust and progress.
Commitment to Inclusive Growth
The statement reaffirmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable economy, welcoming constructive dialogue with stakeholders.
“It is a critical time for our country. What is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions. Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders,” the minister emphasized.
As Nigeria navigates its economic recovery, the government called on citizens and leaders alike to prioritize collective prosperity and contribute to the shared goal of a stronger and more prosperous nation.
