A Russian missile strike on Mykolaiv, a southern city in Ukraine, killed one woman and left 16 others injured overnight, local authorities reported on Tuesday. The attack is part of a series of intensified aerial assaults by Moscow on the region.
First responders released images of buildings ablaze, with firefighters battling the flames. “Last night, the enemy attacked Mykolaiv. A woman was killed,” Ukraine’s emergency services confirmed, adding that 16 people were injured in the strike.
Mykolaiv, a city with a pre-war population of nearly 500,000, has been a frequent target since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Although Ukrainian forces successfully pushed Russian troops out of the area in the autumn of 2022, the city has continued to suffer regular missile and drone attacks.
In recent weeks, Russian forces have also escalated airstrikes on the nearby port city of Odesa, damaging civilian infrastructure and port facilities crucial to Ukraine’s economy.
Ukraine’s air force reported downing 12 of the 17 Iranian-made drones launched by Russia overnight, including some targeting Mykolaiv. Despite these defense efforts, the toll on civilians and infrastructure remains heavy as the conflict continues.
