The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, also known as Telu 1, has issued a directive requesting to be addressed as ‘His Imperial Majesty’ rather than the traditional title ‘His Royal Majesty.’ The monarch explained that this change reflects the historical significance and respect commanded by his position as a direct descendant of Oduduwa and the natural paramount ruler of Iwoland.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, Oba Akanbi emphasized that Iwo has always been a crown state, unlike other towns where kings were elevated from Baaleship (chieftaincy) to monarchy. “The stool of Oluwo commands the respect of the direct blood of Oduduwa… Iwo stool was never upgraded from Baaleship. It is a natural Paramount crown from formation,” the statement read.

The traditional ruler further noted that his position as Oluwo should be distinct from other first-class Yoruba monarchs, and any correspondence failing to address him as ‘His Imperial Majesty’ would not be honored. “No General will love to be called a sergeant, likewise no Doctor will answer the name of a nurse,” he added.

This request has stirred conversation about the appropriate titles for traditional rulers in Nigeria. While many other notable monarchs like the Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, and Awujale of Ijebuland are addressed as ‘His Royal Majesty,’ Oba Akanbi insists that his title holds greater significance.

In contrast, critics, such as human rights activist Adeola Soetan, have argued against the use of the term “Imperial Majesty.” Soetan contended that no traditional ruler in Nigeria has the sovereignty or absolute territorial power to justify such a title, especially in a constitutional democracy. He called the use of ‘Imperial Majesty’ an “oversized wrong title” and suggested ‘His Highness’ as a more fitting designation.

Despite these objections, Oba Akanbi remains firm in his demand for the title, encouraging his subjects and the public to officially recognize him as ‘His Imperial Majesty.
