An Ibadan-based entrepreneur and founder/Chief Executive Officer of Sooyah Bistro, Olamidun Ogundoyin, has shared an inspiring story of how a modest investment of N20,000 laid the foundation for what would become one of Nigeria’s fast-rising food brands.
Speaking during the grand opening of Sooyah Bistro’s new outlet along Akala Expressway, Ibadan, on Saturday, Ogundoyin reflected on her humble beginnings and urged Nigerian youths to embrace small-scale entrepreneurship rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
“I started Sooyah Bistro in 2018 as a side hustle in Lagos with just N20,000 worth of stock and a suya mallam,” she said. “The original idea was to spread the joy of Nigerian food and reimagine how we eat suya. We have since grown organically no bank loans, no investors just pure passion and the incredible support of our customers.”
Ogundoyin, who described her brand as “Suya wey get master’s degree,” emphasized that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are critical to Nigeria’s economic growth. She advised young Nigerians to channel their creativity and resilience into building sustainable ventures instead of succumbing to the “Japa” syndrome.
“I want to advise Nigerian youths to start small. Be passionate. Be dedicated. I began with just N20,000 in Lagos, with no formal funding, and today we’re celebrating our 11th branch. Your passion is more valuable than money,” she said.
The newly opened Akala Express branch marks Sooyah Bistro’s second outlet in Ibadan, following the first on Ring Road. The remaining nine branches are located in Lagos, with plans underway to expand into Bodija, Abuja, and other parts of Nigeria. The company currently employs over 120 staff nationwide.
Guests at the grand opening enjoyed a lively atmosphere filled with music, laughter, and the signature Sooyah Bistro flavors that have become a staple for suya lovers across the country.
With its creative offerings such as Suya burgers, Suya shawarma, and Suya rice bowls, Sooyah Bistro continues to distinguish itself as a proudly indigenous brand, redefining Nigerian street food with a contemporary twist and world-class service.
