President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on traditional rulers in Nasarawa State to continue promoting peace and unity among the diverse ethnic and cultural groups in the state, as a foundation for sustainable growth and development.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the President gave the charge in Lafia on Saturday during the turbaning of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as the Magajin Dangin Lafian Bare-bari by the Lafia Emirate Council.
Speaking at the colourful event, President Tinubu noted that peace and social cohesion were essential to enabling citizens across the 13 local government areas of the state to enjoy the dividends of democracy. He urged residents and stakeholders to continue embracing harmony across religious and ethnic divides.
“Your elevation to this prestigious traditional title is not only a profound personal honour but also a resounding affirmation of your unwavering commitment to public service, community development, and the preservation of cultural heritage,” Tinubu said of Senator Wadada.
Describing the new Magajin Dangi as a patriotic Nigerian with a strong record in public service and philanthropy, the President expressed confidence that Wadada would use his new position to promote peace and foster unity not just within the Lafia Emirate but across Nasarawa State and the country.
“The title carries with it immense historical significance and moral responsibility. There is no doubt that you will continue to embody the virtues of leadership, integrity, and service to humanity,” Tinubu added.
Akpabio, Sule, Others Pay Tribute
Also speaking at the ceremony, Senate President Godswill Akpabio represented by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin praised Wadada as a man of honour and generosity whose contributions to the welfare of his constituents, particularly the underprivileged, had earned him the respect of many.
Akpabio also commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his developmental efforts across Nasarawa State, saying his administration had achieved visible progress and should sustain the pace of good governance.
In his remarks, Governor Sule expressed gratitude to the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad (rtd), for recognising deserving sons and daughters of the state through traditional titles, which he said help foster unity. He described Nasarawa as currently the most peaceful state in Nigeria, attributing the success to inclusive leadership and support from traditional institutions.
Wadada Pledges to Deepen Public Service
In his acceptance speech, Senator Wadada expressed appreciation to the Emirate Council and dignitaries in attendance, pledging to remain a strong voice in the National Assembly and to initiate impactful programmes for the people of Nasarawa West and beyond.
“This honour is a call to greater responsibility. I will not relent in serving humanity and sponsoring legislation that brings real development to our people,” Wadada stated.
Earlier, the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad (rtd), charged the senator to use his new position to stand firmly for truth, support the vulnerable, and continue to serve the people with integrity.
