ABUJA — The United States has introduced new visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens, cutting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas to a single entry with a three-month validity, effective immediately.

The announcement was made Tuesday by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, which cited the Department of State’s ongoing global visa reciprocity review as the basis for the policy shift.

“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the embassy stated.

However, the new restriction will not apply retroactively. The embassy clarified that all U.S. non-immigrant visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid under the original terms of issuance.

Part of Global Security Standardisation

According to the U.S. Mission, the change aligns with the Department of State’s broader aim to harmonise visa terms based on international security and immigration control benchmarks.

“U.S. visa criteria and standards are designed to protect the integrity of U.S. immigration systems,” the statement read. “These standards are based on global technical and security benchmarks.”

The embassy outlined several key areas of compliance for visa reciprocity, including the use of secure travel documents, effective visa overstay management, and robust information sharing between countries to safeguard public safety.

While the U.S. did not specifically cite Nigeria’s performance in these areas, the embassy noted that Washington is actively working with Abuja to address existing gaps.

“The U.S. Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” it said.

Diplomatic Ties Intact Amid Tighter Rules

Despite the policy change, the U.S. reaffirmed its diplomatic commitment to Nigeria, describing the bilateral relationship as “longstanding” and based on “mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity.”

The embassy also applauded Nigerian immigration and security agencies for ongoing reform efforts aimed at aligning with international best practices.

“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices,” the embassy added.

Nigerians Urged to Comply with Visa Terms

The embassy encouraged all Nigerian travellers to respect the updated visa conditions and maintain accurate, verifiable travel documentation.

“Nigerian travellers are encouraged to respect and adhere to the terms of their visas, and ensure travel documents are authentic, accurate, and up to date.”

The update comes amid broader concerns in Washington over visa overstays and border security, particularly as the U.S. tightens immigration rules globally.

Despite the more restrictive framework, U.S. officials say the door remains open for collaboration, especially in areas such as education, business, and cultural exchange.

“The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria,” the embassy said, adding that it “looks forward to continued cooperation at all levels.”
