Kaduna, Nigeria – The Kaduna State Government has released N548 million to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Endwell Fund, bringing an end to a protracted dispute between the government and the union.
The resolution follows the intervention of Governor Uba Sani, who directed the immediate disbursement of the funds. The acting Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mubarak Mohammed, announced the development at a press conference in Kaduna on Thursday.
“I am pleased to announce that Governor Uba Sani has successfully resolved the long-standing dispute between the Kaduna State Government and the NUT regarding the NUT Endwell Fund,” Mohammed stated.
The Endwell Fund, sourced from statutory deductions from teachers’ salaries, is designed to provide financial support to teachers during service and retirement.
Mohammed explained that negotiations between the government and the NUT led to an agreement under which all related litigation would be discontinued, and the union would gain full control of the fund. Additionally, he noted that structural reforms would be implemented to improve the fund’s efficiency and accountability.
Governor Sani’s intervention was lauded as part of his broader commitment to improving education and teacher welfare in Kaduna State. Since assuming office in May 2023, he has prioritized access to quality education, increased student enrollment, and improved learning conditions across schools.
“The resolution of this issue is a testament to the governor’s dedication to fairness, justice, and the overall development of Kaduna State,” Mohammed added.
The Kaduna chapter of the NUT welcomed the government’s decision, describing it as a significant step toward improving teachers’ welfare. The union’s chairman, Ibrahim Dalhatu, expressed gratitude to Governor Sani for his role in resolving the matter.
“The release of the N548 million to the NUT Endwell Fund is a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance the welfare of teachers in Kaduna State,” Dalhatu stated.
Education stakeholders in the state have also commended the resolution, expressing optimism that it will foster a stronger relationship between the government and the teaching workforce while ensuring better educational outcomes for students.
