ABUJA, Nigeria – June 20, 2025 — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has thrown his full weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, reaffirming that the alliance will always place the Nigerian people at the heart of its political mission as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the statement Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, following the formal adoption of the ADC as the unified platform for a growing opposition coalition determined to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The coalition — which brings together prominent political figures including Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other opposition leaders — was officially unveiled on Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the decision to unite under the ADC banner followed “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s current political and socio-economic challenges, and the growing urgency for a new direction.

“A Competent, Capable, and Compassionate Leadership”

Obi, who emerged as a leading opposition figure during the 2023 presidential race, emphasized that the new coalition aims to usher in “a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership” that will prioritize the future of Nigeria by focusing on the welfare of its citizens.

He called for sacrifice, unity, and collaboration across party lines: “No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy.”

Key Appointments Signal Strategic Positioning

At the unveiling event, the coalition announced former Senate President David Mark as interim National Chairman and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary — appointments seen as a deliberate effort to balance experience, regional reach, and political weight.

Political observers say the inclusion of high-profile leaders from across Nigeria’s political spectrum signals a renewed strategy to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead-up to 2027.

Reactions and Road Ahead

While supporters of the coalition have welcomed the move as a bold step toward genuine opposition unity, critics — including Tinubu’s political allies — have dismissed the ADC as a “recycling hub for failed ambition.”

However, civil society voices such as activist Aisha Yesufu have urged the coalition to seize the moment by centering youth and women in its leadership and policy agenda.

With two years to go until the next general elections, the ADC-led alliance faces a significant challenge: converting broad political consensus into grassroots mobilisation and credible national appeal.

For Obi and his coalition partners, however, the mission is clear. “This is about Nigeria,” Obi declared. “And Nigerians deserve a government that works for them.”
