LAGOS — The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its preliminary findings on the train derailment that occurred on August 26, 2025, confirming that 21 passengers sustained injuries but no lives were lost. The incident, which took place at Asham Station, involved a locomotive with registration number CDD5c2 2701.

The train had departed from Idu Station in Abuja at 9:45 a.m., carrying 618 people, including passengers, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) crew, security, and service staff.

“At approximately 11:09 h, shortly after passing a manually operated switch point at Asham Station, the forward locomotive and adjoining coaches derailed and overturned,” the NSIB stated.

Human Error and Excessive Speed

While the NSIB’s preliminary report is subject to further analysis, the NRC had previously attributed the derailment to human error, specifically “excessive speeding” and the “misapplication of the emergency braking system.” The NRC had conducted its own in-house investigation and made public statements to this effect.

The NSIB’s preliminary findings and recommendations are now available for download on its website, with the bureau emphasizing that ongoing investigations will lead to a more comprehensive final report with additional safety recommendations.

NRC Resumes Services After Repairs

In a separate statement, the NRC confirmed that its engineers have successfully re-railed all affected coaches and locomotives. The assets have been moved to workshops for further assessment.

“Our team of engineers has successfully repaired the main line to a level that allows us to safely resume operations,” the NRC stated. While train services have recommenced, work on the secondary track is still ongoing. The NRC has confirmed that this second line will remain out of use until all necessary repairs are completed.

The corporation also stated that a comprehensive safety and infrastructure assessment has been initiated to ensure the corridor meets the highest standards before a full resumption of services. According to the NRC, safety is their top priority as they work to restore public confidence in rail travel.
