Acclaimed indigenous drama series ÌWÉ ÒWE YORÙBÁ (Book of Yoruba Proverbs) is garnering international recognition, winning Best African Indigenous Film at the 2024 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF) and Best Costume at the Brampton International Nollywood Film Festival (BINFF). The series has also been nominated for Best TV Series at the upcoming TINFF 2025, marking another major milestone for Nigerian cultural storytelling on the global stage.

Produced by Sesan Jigan Films, the series is a richly layered exploration of Yoruba proverbs, rooted in historical events and interpreted through powerful real-life scenarios. Each episode unpacks a proverb, blending moral lessons, cultural heritage, and dramatic storytelling to educate and entertain a wide audience.

Directed by Saheed Apanpa, a seasoned filmmaker with over 50 titles to his name, the project reflects his years of experience in both the Nigerian and American film industries. Apanpa’s attention to detail and commitment to cultural authenticity shine throughout the production.

The series is backed by executive producers Jigan Ruth Oluwatosin and Jigan Oluwasesan Olayemi, whose combined strengths in event design and visual storytelling contribute to the show’s immersive “epic atmosphere.” Their synergy has helped create a compelling series that bridges entertainment and cultural preservation.

Adding star power and comedic sensibility is associate producer Owen Gee, a pioneer of modern skit-making in Nigeria. His influence helps the series strike a balance between traditional wisdom and contemporary relevance.

Filmed on location in a remote village in Abeokuta, Ogun State, ÌWÉ ÒWE YORÙBÁ leverages rustic architecture and dramatic natural settings to evoke an ancient world where proverbs come alive. Despite logistical challenges, the production team remained committed to authenticity, creating a visually rich experience that honors Yoruba heritage.

Beyond accolades, the series is set to become a vital educational tool. With future seasons planned and talks of educational outreach, ÌWÉ ÒWE YORÙBÁ is positioned not just as a piece of entertainment, but as a living archive of Yoruba wisdom and identity.

With its growing international acclaim and continued commitment to cultural excellence, ÌWÉ ÒWE YORÙBÁ stands as a shining example of how indigenous African storytelling can resonate with global audiences.

Sesan Jigan, who has been officially invited to TINFF 2025 as both a delegate and panelist, will represent the series at the festival, where further recognition for the groundbreaking project may be on the horizon.
