The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Congratulating Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora, the government urged citizens to emulate the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement read. “The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.”

The government further encouraged Nigerians of all faiths to use the period to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting ongoing efforts to promote unity and development. Citizens were also advised to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the festivities.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The occasion is typically marked with prayers, lectures, processions, and acts of charity.

In Nigeria, where the day is recognised as a national public holiday, the festival is not only a spiritual observance but also an opportunity for religious and political leaders to call for unity and peace, particularly at a time when the country continues to confront security and economic challenges.
