Chelsea are on the brink of securing the signature of highly rated forward Liam Delap, with final negotiations on a long-term contract nearing completion, according to reports from trusted transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Premier League giants are reportedly ready to activate the 21-year-old striker’s £30 million release clause, with only formal communication from the club remaining before the deal is made official.
Romano shared the latest update on Thursday, stating, “Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca appreciation + UCL football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate £30m release clause. #CFC just wait for formal communication now.”
The move comes after a series of positive discussions between Chelsea and the player’s representatives. Delap, currently seen as one of English football’s most promising young talents, is said to have been swayed by the influence of new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with youth players during his time at Manchester City and Leicester.
Delap’s potential move to Stamford Bridge also reflects Chelsea’s intent to build a youthful and dynamic squad ahead of their return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
Romano had earlier noted that Delap had given his preference to Chelsea’s project, writing, “Chelsea are prepared to seal Liam Delap deal soon after positive talks with the striker again this week. Delap gives his preference to Chelsea project and is now expected to follow with formal steps, including £30m release clause to be triggered. Deal underway.”
The England U21 international, who came through Manchester City’s youth ranks and spent last season on loan at Hull City, has been widely admired for his physicality, work rate, and finishing ability. His potential arrival would add depth to Chelsea’s attacking options and continue the club’s strategy of investing in rising talents with long-term upside.
