President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of the groundbreaking Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), signaling a transformative era in Nigeria’s transportation sector.
This visionary initiative is set to reshape the transportation landscape by targeting the introduction of over 11,500 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-enabled vehicles, along with providing 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing vehicles that depend on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Simultaneously, the initiative will foster local manufacturing, assembly, and extensive job creation, aligned with the presidential directive.
At the core of the PCNGI’s agenda is a Comprehensive Adoption Strategy, encompassing key elements such as the Empowering Workshops Programme with a nationwide network of workshops, local assembly, and robust job creation. The initiative will initially prioritize mass transit systems and student hubs, with the aim of substantially reducing transit costs for the general population in the immediate term.
As part of its commitment to ensuring seamless integration within the current energy value chain, the PCNGI will facilitate the establishment of workshops across all states and geopolitical zones. These workshops will provide essential kits and comprehensive training to newly employed staff, generating opportunities for technical skill development and employment for Nigerian citizens.
The nationwide network of workshops, conceived through this initiative, will drive wide accessibility and utilization of CNG technology and expertise, facilitating smoother transitions for vehicle owners and fostering economic growth for Nigeria.
Under the auspices of the PCNGI, the following strategic goals will be pursued:
- Development of new Intrastate Mass Transit systems powered by CNG.
- Support for states to incorporate CNG buses into their Intrastate Mass Transit networks.
- Deployment of CNG buses through Private Mass Transit operators, supported by innovative financing programs.
- Encouragement of investment in CNG processing, distribution, and utilization through incentives.
- Provision of training and technology transfer for After-Sales Services and maintenance, creating sustainable jobs.
President Tinubu’s emphasis on assembling CNG-enabled vehicles domestically will drive economic growth, employment opportunities, and the advancement of the nation’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.
The launch of this initiative further underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering a cleaner environment, curbing carbon emissions, and enhancing energy security by leveraging domestic natural gas resources.
