In an important development, the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has called upon President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to prioritize the democratic process during the election of principal officers in the 10th National Assembly. The DWI, through its National Coordinator, Dr. Sunusi Umar, conveyed this message during their Colloquium held at Arewa House, Kaduna State.
The primary objective of the letter addressed to Tinubu is to prevent the escalation of regional distrust in Nigeria and safeguard constitutional democracy, ensuring a fair and transparent leadership succession through elections within the 10th National Assembly. The DWI also aims to draw attention to the potential consequences of succumbing to the machinations of a brewing cabal seeking to undermine the populist agenda of Tinubu’s government through any means necessary.
As a staunch advocate for constitutional democracy, the DWI emphasizes that every citizen should have an equal right and opportunity to participate, rather than granting privileges to specific individuals or groups. Accordingly, they firmly believe that only a National Assembly leader independently and willingly chosen by the members themselves can assuage growing regional tensions and promote robust understanding and cooperation among the elected representatives.
The DWI strongly opposes the current move to impose leaders on individuals who possess undeniable maturity and proven experience, duly elected to represent their respective constituencies in the incoming 10th National Assembly. Such an imposition, in their view, encroaches upon the sanctity of the legislature, undermines the popular will, and contravenes the democratic principle of separating powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
The DWI’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the democratic ideals that underpin the Nigerian political landscape. By ensuring equal opportunities for all aspirants in the 10th NASS elections, Tinubu can pave the way for a more inclusive and harmonious governance structure that upholds the principles of democracy, transparency, and fairness.
